A recent test performed by Johnson Research of Parma, Idaho, and Hoechst Roussel Vet was done to test the effects of strategic deworming using Safe-Guard, Gainpro Supplementation and implantation with Revalor-G on the grazing performance of stocker steers. Dr. Wade Nichols of Hoechst Roussel Vet said the test was conducted to see if using the products together would have additive results. "Each one of these products work to increase the overall gain in cattle, but they work in different ways," he said . "Safe-Guard kills parasites, which improves digestion and absorption. Gainpro alters the microbial population of the rumen for better digestion of forage, and Revalor-G helps the body utilize the nutrients for maximum growth." The test was made up of 320 English cross-bred, short-yearling steers weighing 584 pounds. There were five pasture groups of eight head assigned to each of the eight treatment combinations. The steers were grazed 114 days on pasture which was made up of 70 to 80% native grasses and 20 to 30% legume species. All the steers received 2 lbs./head/day of a corn-based supplement. Gainpro and SafeGuard 1.96 percent Flaked Meal Gain (days 28 and 56) were provided through the supplement. Strategic deworming with Safe-Guard increased weight gain by 22 lbs. compared to no deworming. Supplementation with Gainpro and implantation with Revalor-G provided an additional 20 lbs. and 38 lbs., respectively. Economic analyses showed the use of a Safe-Guard strategic deworming program along with Gainpro and Revalor-G resulted in a net profit that was $57.99 per head greater than for the negative control steers. "We found a 40 percent gain in the steers receiving all three products compared to those that received nothing," Nichols said. "Even if you get half that response, it's worth the investment." |
