Lane County Feeders in western Kansas is in the final stages of construction of a new state-of-the-art processing facility. When finished, it will house ACCU-TRAC(R), the Electronic Cattle Management System from Micro Chemical Inc. of Amarillo,Tex. This is the most comprehensive system available for managing individual animals. Individual cattle management, objective measurement, sorting cattle into like groups, co-mingling different ownerships of cattle, individual feed prorating and managing multiple sale dates will help optimize the endpoint of each animal to realize the most profit per head.
"We're more concerned with the total system approach where we are meeting the needs and desires of the customer/consumer than just a way to get more for live cattle," said Jim Meetz, Manager of Lane County Feeders, located near Dighton, Kansas. When the new processing facility is completed and in operation, there are two ways the information will be used. First, the system will sort cattle into like marketing groups so the inventory fits a narrower range of targets, like the specifications set by the food service and export markets. Getting information back to the producer about the feeding performance of his cattle and the individual carcass data is the second way the information will be used. This will be useful to the producer in making necessary genetic choices.
The facility has been completely designed with low stress cattle handling as a top priority following proven designs by Dr. Temple Grandin of Grandin Livestock Systems. Cattle owners are welcome to watch their cattle during processing in the new facility.Feed*Lot Magazine will have an update on the progress of this project in the next issue. |
