American Salers Association has released the 1999 Salers Sire Summery in which cattle breeders can access the latest Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs) and accuracy information. The EPDs listed in the 1999 analysis include birth, weaning and yearling weights; milk and scrotal circumference as well as carcass EPDs. The carcass EPDs section highlights EPDs for carcass traits including carcass weight, ribeye area, fat thickness and marbling score. In addition, two new EPDs were incorporated into the Salers Sire Summery- stayability and docility. EPDs for stayability predict genetic differences in the probability that daughters will stay in production until at least six years of age, with higher numbers representing favorable genetics for longevity and sustained reproductive performance. EPDs for docility are also expressed in units of probability and predict genetic differences in the likelihood offspring are scored as 1 (docile) 2 (acceptable) as compared to generally less desirable scores of 3, 4, or 5 (nervous or aggressive). Consequently, similar to EPDs for stayability, higher EPDs for docility represent preferred genetics for calmer expected behavior. ASA's performance programs can be found at www.salersusa.org on the internet. In addition to the bulls listed in the most current sire summary, the site also offers updated EPDs on all 1996 and 1997 Salers-sired bulls.
