The Northeast Colorado Bull Test Association completed its 23rd annual test on February 23. The 180 bulls finished the test with an average daily gain of 3.41 pounds per day and a weight per day of age of 3.07 pounds. A Charolais bull from Hoit Charolais, Guide Rock, Neb., achieved the highest performance index and average daily gain of all entries. The Hoit bull posted a performance index of 127, average daily gain of 4.72, and a 3.42 pound weight per day of age (WDA). Eleven breed groups were represented: Red Angus, Red Angus calving ease, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Maine-Anjou, Cross, Angus, Angus calving ease, Salers, Simmental and Hereford. Calving ease entries must have a maximum birth weight of 80 pounds and maximum birth weight EPD within each breed group. The ratios are formulated by dividing an individual bull's performance by he average ADG and WDA for their respective breed groups. Bulls that had a performance index of 95 or higher, passed a breeding soundness exam and have a yearling frame score of 4.0 or larger were eligible to sell in the NCBTA's annual sale. Some of the ranches with winning entries included: South Fork Cattle of Gill, Colo., Eye Dot Ranch of West Branch, Iowa, Kenella Gelbvieh of Iliff, Colo., Sidwell Hay and Cattle of Gill, Colo., and Propst Ranch from Merino, Colo., to name a few. |
