Nutrition, Safety and End Cuts Anchor TBC's Checkoff Plan Texas beef producers in 1999 will se state beef checkoff dollars go toward programs to help Texans better understand beef's nutrition and safety as well as the economy of underutilized cuts, said chairman of the Texas Beef Council (TBC) Jay O'Brien. "TBC will use Texas checkoff dollars to extend national programs developed by the NCBA into this state," O'Brien said. "These programs will use nutrition and safety as common denominators that consumers can identify with our products. Many of them also will remind consumers of the great taste and value of underutilized beef cuts from the chuck and round." Beef Producers and Grocery Chain Promote Healthy Living Beef producers hope to elevate all Texans' appreciation for beef's nutrition through the checkoff's participation in a Healthy Living promotion. The promotion unites the Texas Beef Council and HEB Grocery Co. with two prestigious Texas health groups -- the 4,000 member Texas Dietetic Association and the 5,400 member Texas Academy of Family Physicians -- to emphasize to Texans that beef's nutrition provides good health. "This partnership was formed to help improve Texans' understanding of a healthy diet," said O'Brien. "We want to remind Texans that beef provides essential vitamins and minerals that lead to energy and stronger immune systems among many other benefits. The Texas health professionals' endorsements will appear on special Healthy Living displays that will distribute the checkoff-funded "Why Beef?" brochure. This colorful information piece provides science-based facts about beef's role in enhancing health. |
