Japanese Imports Should Increase in 2000

The USDA ag attache in Tokyo estimates that Japanese imports of U.S. beef will increase in 2000. Japan is forecast to import 330,000 metric tons (mt) next year, up from the 325,000 mt anticipated for 1999. This would keep the U.S. as the number one beef supplier to Japan with 48 percent of the market, just ahead of Australia, with 47 percent market share.

"Due to Japan's slumping economy, consumers are seeking meat value, but sustaining consumption levels," the attache said.

Beef export figures for the first half of this year show substantial gains, according to the U.S. Meat Export Federation. U.S. beef exports including variety meats rose seven percent in volume and eight percent in value from January through June. Total worldwide exports amounted to 537,488 mt for the first six months, valued at $1.5 billion. This is up from last year.
