Industry leaders have long talked about the increased value of pre-conditioned calves. A Texas Hill Country sale barn is finding out just how much of a premium such calves will bring. Jordan Cattle Auction is planning its first Premium Stocker and Feeder Sale Nov. 18 at the company's San Saba, Tex., auction. Several are planned for 2000. The calves in this sale have been weaned at least 45 days and have been in a specific health and nutrition program. More importantly, their weaning, health and nutrition programs can be verified. Ken Jordan of Jordan Cattle Company said in developing the parameters for this sale, he and Charles Key, DVM, manager of the health program, have come up with a specific vaccination regimen along with deworming at weaning.
Not only do they require such vaccinations for cattle going into the sales but they are requiring specific vaccines that have credibility in the industry. Producers can choose from BRSV Vac 4 from Bayer, Pyramid 4 from Ft. Dodge or Bovishield 4 from Pfizer for 4-ways, Once PMH from Bayer, Presponse from Ft. Dodge or One Shot from Pfizer for pasteurella vaccines, and Vision 7 Somnus from Bayer or Ultrabeac 7/Somnus from Pfizer are required for clostridials and haemophilus somnus vaccines. All vaccines must be verified with a sales receipt and vaccine lot numbers. Bull calves have to be knife cut prior to or at weaning. Vaccines must be given subcutaneously or in the neck if intramuscular. Recommended nutrition in-cludes high quality, high energy rations for the first three to five days after weaning and free choice salt and minerals. Producers are expected to put calves on grass, fields or improved pasture and give them sufficient grazing to maintain growth and health. Allflex is providing electronic ear tags, according to Dave Warren of Allflex USA. The information is being handled by AgInfoLink, according to Ann Anderson. "This open information allows buyers to ensure that the process-verification program has been followed," Jordan said. "Jordan Cattle Auction is proud to initiate a concept that we think will change the cattle industry," said Jordan. "It will be the first sale that combines the auction market's unique method of price discovery with required and effective management practices, verified by available technology, so we offer only those cattle that will produce consistently high quality beef carcasses." Jordan said consigned cattle will be sorted into groups by breed, body condition, weights and sizes. "This sorting will lead to more uniform lots," he said. In addition to live bidding, buyers can view the lots on the internet and bid by phone. For more information, visit Jordan's web site at www.jordancattle.com. |
