"What will it be?" as the saying goes. I believe it is somewhat of a fatalist vision. It is as if we don't control what is happening to us. Sometimes it doesn't look like we, as individuals, really are in control. It seems that what is happening is bigger than we are. For progress to take place, we must work together. We can't go off in separate directions and expect society to progress, or even survive. Many have heard the phrase, "Education can solve all problems." This is not only referring to education in the formal sense of master and doctoral degrees, but also in the sense of being informed. In order to discover the truth or form opinions, you must be informed with solid information. When cattlemen are informed, we can act collectively to deal with issues or problems in a realistic manner. To do this takes time and effort -- similar to the time and effort required with a formal education -- but it is absolutely necessary if we are to avoid heading off in an unproductive direction. Education comes in many forms, and one form is this magazine. Trade publications, such as FEED*LOT, are free to cattle producers, and have an obligation to inform readers about topics involving this industry. These magazines are supported by their advertisers, who in turn, want the readers to be well informed. As editor and publisher, I have the responsibility to inform you about important issues in the industry so that you can make your own educated decision. One such issue is addressed by Dr. David P. Price on page 26. In his article, he discusses a problem for the beef industry that is 30 years in the making -- and, if left uncovered -- could lead to the banning of important products to the U.S. beef industry. "The Real Antibiotics Issue" will be addressed in the next several issues of FEED*LOT magazine. In another article, Rich McKee, the Kansas Livestock Association's Feedlot Division Secretary warns that, "Society is no longer concerned about whether there will be food to eat, but instead focuses on how it was provided." He comments that the industry needs to realize it is being monitored in this respect and be aware of the long term effect it may have. So become informed, and you could help in directing the future of the industry. |
