The Retail Value Steer Challenge, a fundraiser to complete the Nebraska Cattlemen Foundation's campaign to endow a fund to support UNL Livestock and Meats Judging Teams members, has begun. The 47 steers donated by producers, Nebraska Cattlemen affiliates and supporting companies are competing for $10,000 in cash. Winners will be based on retail carcass value as determined by UNL Animal Science specialists. Cash prizes are: $2,500 for first place, $2,000 for second place, $1,750 for third place, $1,500 for fourth place, and $1,250 for fifth place. In addition, $1,000 will go to the top winner's Nebraska Cattlemen affiliate. "The first thing we point out is that this is a fundraiser that is for a great cause. Second, it can provide bragging rights for whoever's steer produces the best carcass. Third, a Nebraska Cattlemen affiliate will win cash that can be used for its programs or activities," says Bill Rishel, NC Foundation President. "We think it is a good program all the way around and we're working to make sure it's a fun one that people enjoy." The Retail Value Steer Challenge continues the campaign that is working toward the establishment of a $100,000 endowment to support members of the UNL judging teams. Steers were delivered to Darr Feedlot the first week of November. All cattle will be slaughtered the same day and prizes will be awarded June 8-10 in Broken Bow at the Nebraska Cattlemen midyear conference. |
