Beef production in 1999 is projected to total a record 26.3 billion pounds. This will be nearly 650 million pounds higher than the record set a year ago. Aggressive marketing of fed cattle has allowed the industry to overcome currentness problems, but continued low feed grain prices promote feeding cattle to heavier than normal slaughter weights, resulting in heavier carcasses. Low input costs will support feeder cattle and calf prices as the feeding industry attempts to keep pens full and maximize returns in an upward-trending market.
