Beef Demand, Exports Continue To Climb

According to preliminary first quarter data, beef demand is still on the rise. Demand increased nine percent in the first quarter of 2000 compared with the first quarter last year, marking the fourth straight quarter in which demand has improved.

"The strong demand for beef can be attributed to the robust economy, increased consumer incomes, growth in the beef export markets, increased availability of new conventient beef products and positive attitudes about the nutritional value of beef," said NCBA Chief Economist Chuck Lambert.

Exports of U.S. beef and variety meats set a new record at nearly 2.45 billion pounds in 1999. This is a nine percent increase in volume and a 14 percent increase in value compared to 1998. Since 1990, beef exports have increased over 100 percent on a volume basis.
