The 31st Annual Great Western Beef Expo concluded the end of May, with Schurrtop Angus & Charolais of Maywood, Neb., winning the Champion Net Return Award. Marty Schurr accepted the award. Schurr was among 65 people who attended the awards program in Sterling, Colorado. At the awards program, Dr. Keith Belk from Colorado State University's Animal Science Department spoke about what is happening in the meat industry in terms of meat tenderness and tenderness testing. He also spoke about research possibilities that could be conducted with the Great Western Beef Expo steers. The 256 steers on test posted a strong average daily gain, feed efficiency and cost of gain for the 1999/2000 test year. As a group, the steers ended the 156-day test with an average daily gain of 3.6 pounds, 5.77 pounds of feed per pound of gain and a $0.35 cost of gain. The carcass data was not as impressive as the feedlot data. Only 42 percent of the steers graded Prime or Choice. However, 71.09 percent had yield grades of 1 or 2, with the average yield grade being 2.66, along with an average back fat of .44. Schurrtop's champion net return pen was a set of straight bred Angus sired steers. They posted a net return of $158.94/steer. Reserve Champion in Net Return was DeBruycker Charolais from Dutton, Mont. They posted a net return of $136.77 per steer. Champion in feed efficiency was a set of Braunvieh sired steers from A.W. Thorne Land & Cattle & Shaffer Cattle Co. of Adair, Okla. The steers posted a feed efficiency of 6.90. Reserve Champion honors went to Soukup Livestock Farms of Lake Andes, South Dakota, with a set of Limousin sired steers. They posted a feed efficiency of 7.37. There was a tie for Champion Carcass Price/Lb. between George Rober of Sedgwick, Colo., and Golden Link of Firth, Neb., and Horse Prairie Ranch of Dillon, Mont. Both pens posted a contest-only price of $1.1561 per pound. Sponsors for the Great Western Beef Expo were Pfizer Animal Health and VetLife. |
