Due to the increased popularity of electronic identification tags, Allflex USA, Inc. announced they would be reducing the price of their High Performance Electronic Identification Tags for livestock by an average of 35 percent. "We're glad to deliver on the promise of lower electronic tag costs," said Dave Warren, president of Allflex USA. "We knew that our manufacturing production efficiencies would increase as tag usage climbed. And we're very pleased that producers can now access this technology more easily." Beyond the cost savings represented by high-volume production, Warren says beef producers benefit in being able to choose between tamperproof and reusable EID tags. A new tiered pricing system for the two tag types, along with volume production savings, results in retail tag prices ranging from $2.10 to $3.95. The price reduction took effect in March. Allflex introduced EID products in North America in 1993 at a retail price between $8 and $10. A steady increase in adoption of this technology has driven volume significantly higher. The information gathered through the electronic tags assists producers in making production decisions based on actual data, eliminating much of the guesswork from animal production. Allflex has placed EID reading systems in 12 beef packing plants and more than 40 feedyards. "To our knowledge, this is the only fully-automated system operational in beef packing plants at this time," says Calvin Gunter, Electronics Product Manager for Allflex. "EID technology is central to the data explosion we're seeing in animal agriculture," Gunter adds. The number of fully-integrated systems that carry data from ranch to feedyard to packer and back is expanding, and Allflex technology has been incorporated into a variety of ranch and feedyard management software systems which are key to this data sharing. "We expect a rapid uptake as both large and small producers place more emphasis on animal performance data," Warren notes.
