Glickman Proposes Organic Standards

Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman recently announced a proposed standard for organic foods that prohibits antibiotics in livestock production and requires 100 percent organic feed.

Organic beef could be a niche market for interested cattle producers, but it shouldn't be touted as safer or more nutritious than conventionally raised beef, said Lynn Kosty, NCBA associate director for food policy. There isn't any scientific evidence showing a health advantage of eating organic foods.

The proposal offers a national definition of organic. Currently states and private organizations have varying terms. The proposal details the methods, practices and substances that can be used in producing and handling organic crops and livestock, as well as processed products.
