The Cattlemen's College held in conjunction with the NCBA Convention offers a variety of learning opportunities for cattlemen. The classes are on Thursday, Feb. 1, and begin at 7:30 a.m. This year classes are divided into three major categories: marketing track, production track and resource management track. In the Marketing Track, Cattle-Fax will teach individuals how to develop a marketing plan in Managing Risk and Marketing, and Alliances will be discussed by a variety of producers. Ag and Trade Policy will be discussed by nationally recognized economists Mark Edelman and Barry Flinchbaugh, and finally producers will be educated on Muscle Profiling and how this checkoff-funded research project is helping the industry find value in the chuck and round. In the Production Track, factors that affect carcass quality will be taught in Carcass Targets and Rewards. Biotechnology and Cattle Health will detail what's new in cattle and microbial genomics, the latest on production traits and disease resistant components, and how producers can benefit from this research. Replacement Heifer Management will concentrate on the merits of raising or purchasing replacement heifers to optimize production systems, and Stock Cattle Management will detail health and nutritional management strategies that can help optimize the performance of stocker cattle. Pre-Weaning Health Programs and Cow-Calf Nutrition will round out the afternoon. In the Resource Management Track, Wayne Hayenga will discuss Estate Planning. Also Ranching for the Future: Preserving Traditions and Managing Forage Resources will inform producers how to use "cowboy easements," grassbanking, fire management and grazing practices. Use of the Internet will be offered in both a morning and afternoon session, with Kyna Estes of the University of Kentucky teaching what ag resources are available on the Internet. Personnel Management will educate employers how to hire, retain and motivate employees. Tickets are $75 with convention registration or $125 without convention registration. Student prices are $40 with registration and $80 without registration. Lunch is included in ticket prices. The 2001 Cattlemen's College is sponsored by NCBA and Pfizer Animal Health. |
