When the crop is packed into the silo, oxygen is excluded and plant sugars are fermented by anaerobic bacteria. Applying a silage inoculant allows producers to have more control over the bacteria and the fermentation process. When forage is cut for silage, it is typically at a pH of 6.5. A well preserved crop has a pH of 4 or less. |
