Research Discovers that Cattle Over

Certified Angus Beef Keeps Growing in 2000

Certified Angus Beef, LLC (CAB), marked the millennium year with record sales of more than half a billion pounds.

According to Jim Riemann, CAB president, 8,000 licensed restaurants and retail stores in the United States and 52 export markets last year sold 555 million pounds of Certified Angus Beef(TM) product. Six more countries and hundreds of licensees were opened to CAB sales with the international division's 21.6 percent growth leading the company.

More than 1.9 million Certified Angus Beef(TM) carcasses were certified this past year, which resulted from a CAB acceptance rate of 18.3 percent. Riemann said the major portion of the 62-million pound increase in product sold by licensees can be attributed to increased carcass utilization, which climbed to an industry leading 288.7 pounds per certified carcass.

Riemann indicated that of the 49 USDA certified programs, Certified Angus Beef(TM) product accounted for more than 75% of beef tonnage sold.

"The positive beef eating experiences Certified Angus Beef(TM) products delivered to consumers around the world are good for Angus producers and the total U.S. beef industry," Riemann said. He invited all beef producers to take advantage of the premiums associated with quality Angus cattle and to work with the growing network of licensed CAB feedlots to make the most of their cattle.

"There may be dozens of other branded beef programs out there, but CAB dominates with nearly three-fourths of all USDA-certified carcasses of modest marbling or higher," Riemann said. "That means the CAB Program channels most of the increasing demand for high-quality beef back to our cooperating Angus producers.

Last year saw plenty of excitement with CAB becoming an Olympic suppliership. CAB is the Official Branded Beef Supplier of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City.

"The positive beef eating experiences CAB products deliver to consumers around the world are good for Angus producers and the total U.S. beef industry."
