Kansas Beef Stocker Conference Scheduled The 2001 Beef Stocker Profitability Conference is scheduled for September 21, 2001, in conjunction with a Kansas State University football weekend. "We wanted to bring stocker producers and managers together to deliver some education programs, as well as mix in some college football," said Dale Blasi, K-State Extension beef specialist and conference organizer. "As a professional refresher, it will be a chance to learn from others in the industry as well as [learn about] current research." In its second year, the conference will provide practical information and management tips to optimize operations, he said. The program will take place at the Manhattan Holiday Inn starting at 10:30a.m. "There is no question that (stockmen) are good at their business," Blasi said. "This opportunity will allow for interaction with others in the field to find solutions to problems or learn more about various issues." The conference will host four speakers presenting information on industry topics, including: *Randy Blach, Cattle-Fax vice president, will discuss the changing beef industry structure and future outlooks for stocker production. *Bill Clymer, Fort Dodge Animal Health parasitologiest, will center his presentation on parasite control. *Jim Drouillard, K-State animal sciences and industry professor, will cover new technologies for detecting sickness. He will also provide ways to improve immunity in stocker cattle. *Mark Spire, K-State veterinary medicine professor, will discuss health management practices. Participants are invited to stick around on Saturday, September 22, for tailgaiting at the Department of Animal Sciences tent in Cat Town in the parking lot southwest of the football stadium, and for the K-State versus New Mexico State football game. "It should be a good time of year for stockers to find a weekend with a lull in activity, depending on fall harvest," Blasi said. "We'll also have two palm handheld computers for door prizes." The conference also signifies the launch of a new Website specifically designed for stock producers. The beefstockerUSA.org site will be operational in September. "The new site is devoted to producers from across the country. It is a gathering place to see what is happening in the industry." For further information, contact Lois Schreiner at 785-532-1267. |
