Colorado Awards Top Beef Hand

Dallas Horton was recognized recently for his relentless work in the beef industry as he was named the Colorado Livestock Association's Beef Top Hand Award winner for 2001.

Horton has been involved in all phases of the beef industry from the cow/calf segment right through to owning a steak house and retail store.

"His passion for the industry shows in all he does," said Bob Bledsoe of Hugo, Colo., CLA's retiring Producer Council Chairman, during the awards presentation on Aug. 3rd at the CLA annual convention in Copper Mountain.

Horton began his career in the beef business growing up on a ranch in southeastern Montana. Following a two-year stint in the army he attended Montana State University and then completed his work on his DVM at Washington State University. From there he went north to Calgary, Canada, where he practiced as a veterinarian for one year.

He moved to the Fort Collins area and completed a Masters Degree in Animal Nutrition at Colorado State University. He is a strong believer in research as an important tool in doing business. In 1977 he started a research and feedyard facility near Wellington. He has expanded to include feeding operations in Greeley, Wellington and Fort Lupton.

He has fed cattle for the Japanese and shipped cattle to the Ukraine.

Horton served as the 29th president of the Colorado Cattle Feeders Association. He has also served in several leadership roles at the national level on the Cattlemen's Beef Board and National Cattlemen's Beef Association.
