Beef Board Officers Elected

Members of the Cattlemen's Beef Board (CBB) elected new officers during the cattle industry's 2002 convention in Denver on Saturday, still riding high on the heels of a visit from President George W. Bush, who classified the cattle industry as "an incredibly important part of America's future."

Outgoing CBB Chairman Dan Hammond of Idaho handed the gavel to the Beef Board's new Chairman, Dee Lacey, Paso Robles, Calif., who simultaneously completed her year of service as vice chair for the board. Installed as the new Vice Chairman was Andy Tucker, from Rockledge, Fla., who served the CBB as secretary/treasurer during 2001. Nelson Curry, from Paris, Ky., was installed as the 2002 CBB Secretary/Treasurer.

"It was a great convention, and it's important to remember that it was a cattle industry convention, with all segments coming together to collaborate," Lacey said. "President Bush validated how important our industry is ... and that was reiterated over and over again during committee meetings."

Among things discussed in Beef Board and joint industry meetings during the week, Lacey said, were programs and strategies focused on: leveraging checkoff dollars at the retail level; developing meaningful industry partnerships - such as that with Taco Bell - that give checkoff dollars the biggest bang for their buck; furthering research efforts that leverage checkoff dollars to help the beef industry face challenges such as that presented by BSE outbreaks in other parts of the world; and continuing educational programs that get the word out about the convenience and nutrition benefits of beef and the growing number of beef products. ©
